The Wife Between Us
By Greer Hendricks & Sarah Pekkanen
St. Martin’s Press
Publication Date: January 8, 2018
Synopsis from Publisher:
A novel of suspense that explores the complexities of marriage and the dangerous truths we ignore in the name of love.
When you read this book, you will make many assumptions.
You will assume you are reading about a jealous wife and her obsession with her replacement.
You will assume you are reading about a woman about to enter a new marriage with the man she loves.
You will assume the first wife was a disaster and that the husband was well rid of her.
You will assume you know the motives, the history, the anatomy of the relationships.
Assume nothing. That is the best mindset to have when reading this book. There are many twists and turns throughout this whole story. I am guessing even the most seasoned readers of suspense and psychological thrillers will not be able to guess the ending. The Wife Between Us is the best example of a psychological thriller, it is tense, compelling, with an unreliable main character that will leave you guessing until the very end.
I am a little nervous about this review, I want readers to start the book with the same expectations I had. Because of the scant and mysterious synopsis, I had no idea what to expect. Even the reviews on Goodreads lacked a lot of details. Everyone just said, this book was a must read. I completely agree and I understand why fellow Bookstagrammers shared little details. It is better if a reader goes into this book with as little information as possible.
Greer and Pekkanen have created a story that will keep readers on the edge of their seats. The story is fast paced and flips between different characters perspectives. At about half way through the story there is a huge shift. When I got to this point, I had to go back a few pages to just make sure I understood what was happening. It was great. The shift reminded me of one of my favorite books of all time, I Let You Go by Clare Mackintosh.
I have been very lucky to have read a lot of books in 2017 with strong female characters. The Wife Between Us, is no exception. The main character in this story is strong, brave, and clever. She is able to get into the mind of the nemesis of this story and outwit them at their own game. It was exciting and enjoyable to read.
The character development in this story is great. Greer and Pekkanen take you deep into the mind of the main character without it being overwhelming. There were certain situations that occurred in the book and I got very nervous for her. I was very anxious and excited to see how she would deal with the situation because I knew about her fears and the circumstances that caused the fear.
This book was thrilling and I found it hard to stop reading. The ending left me speechless. When I closed the book I sat in my seat for a while digesting what I just read. The Wife Between Us is a must read for any fan of psychological suspense.
